Robert H. Coombs, sea captain, of Belfast, Me., married Harriet Pendleton in 1850. Their son Charles R. Coombs, an amateur photographer, began making 4" x 5" glass plate negatives in 1892; around 1895 he began using a 5" x 7" format camera; also took photographs in smaller formats with celluloid and paper negatives.
